Starting Tips For FrontPage

Start using a basic HTML template as your FrontPage template.
Don't try to use any of the more advanced features like themes until you are very happy using FrontPage.
Don't cut and paste from Microsoft Word directly into FrontPage as it produces terrible HTML and if you need ever to edit the HTML it's very confusing. You are also likely to finish up with a mixture of fonts on the same page.

If you need to copy content from Word then copy it first to Notepad or any other plain text editor (not Wordpad) and then copy it from Notepad into FrontPage. You will need to re-do formatting but the result is much better.

Don't use any of the FrontPage features that require that you web host supports FrontPage extensions. Some FrontPage features that require FrontPage sever extensions are:
• Confirmation Field
• Discussion Form Handler
• FrontPage created server-side Image Maps
• Hit Counter
• Registration Form Handler
• Save Results Form Handler
• Scheduled Image
• Scheduled Include Page Component
• Search Form

Support for FrontPage Server Extensions is not essential in order to host FrontPage-based Web sites. If you use a FrontPage component that requires FrontPage Server Extension support and the host doesn't provide it the visitor will receive a 404 error.

When you create FrontPage Web site the folder icon changes and the folder will also contain files that support FrontPage-specific functionality that allow the Web site to be opened, copied, edited, published, and administered with FrontPage. Don't edit any of these files.

Always create a FrontPage web site when starting a new website. Although you can edit web pages that are not part of a FrontPage web site, functions like find and replace across multiple web pages only work if the web pages are part of the same FrontPage web site.
